Phonics and Reading

We use the DfE Letters and Sounds programme as the basis for our phonics teaching. Starting in Reception we teach the phonemes using visual phonics. This carries on through KS1. Letter formation is taught using rhymes from ReadWrite Inc.

We teach discrete phonics lessons within a phonics friendly environment which helps children to apply their skills across the curriculum.

Common Exception Words (or tricky words) are also taught specifically in Reception and KS1.

Each child has individual reading books which they take home. We actively encourage parents to hear their child read at home and provide opportunities for parent/child reading in school. We use book bands to organise our books which are chosen from Oxford Reading Tree and a variety of other reading schemes.

The importance of reading!

Reading a wide variety of books really helps your child develop and extend their language and vocabulary skills which continues to be important throughout school.

Lots of wonderful books can be found in our library as well as the local library.
